Tables are used in web page design in various ways. Sometimes, a table is just a table. Other times, it is the way to place images on a web page exactly where you want them. In other words, tables can be a part of the web design. Tables are also a way to give people information in a pre-determined format or arrangement so that they can absorb more data quickly.

So, here are a couple of ways tables are important to your design:

This table is just a normal run of the mill table. The arrangement is meant to allow the reader to gain information in a pre-determined and illustrative arrangement.

Superhero Alias Powers Achilles Heel
Superman Clark Kent Super strength, x-ray vision, super speed, etc. Kryptonite
Batman Bruce Wayne Intelligence, detective skills, computer skills, athletic skills, utility belt Loneliness
Spiderman Peter Parker Radio-active spider senses Alter-ego
Wonder Woman Diana Prince Super strength, magic lasso, silver bracelets, invisible airplane Steve Trevor

The whole purpose of the above table was to organize data in a pattern. On a web page, it looks the same as if it was in a Word document. Note how fast you can process this data about superheroes. If this was set in a grammar-laden paragraph, then you'd still be reading by now.

This table aligns images and text for a particular informational need.

Lonely looking egg It crawls and eats leaves. In the cocoon, it sits. Now, it can fly.

By arranging the images, the viewer sees the individual life cycle stages of the butterfly in order without the lines of text explaining the order or what each individual stage looks like. Again, if you had to describe the above life cycle in a paper, you'd still be reading that paragraph and you might miss some subtle descriptors which the images can offer the viewer.

These images and text below are also in a table, but the border of the table has been removed. It's the placement of the images that it important to the design to tell its story and teach us a quick fact.

Start here and go East. Turn South.
This is a clockwise example
for digital people.
Turn North. Turn West.

Without a table, the placement of these images in the right alignment would have been very difficult if not impossible to get the exact placement. Tables are very important for both information organization, but they are a very important tool when designing a web page. Tables remove extra words, reducing superfluous text, and can add much needed organization. The audience can quickly and easily get information when tables are used and speed is one of the necessary components of creating web sites. You want your audience to proceed through your topic in a timely fashion. Tables also allow us to design our pages with an eye for white space and symmetry which are discussed on this page.
